Bible Study: Proverbs 19:1–14

Wisdom for the Choices We Make

Last week we finished Proverbs 18, and once again Solomon gave us some very practical wisdom about the way we live and the way we treat one another.
We talked about the power of our words.
We talked about the name of the LORD being a strong tower.
We talked about friendship.
And toward the end of the chapter, we talked about what happens when someone becomes offended.
Proverbs 18:19 told us that an offended brother can become harder to reach than a fortified city.
We’ll see some more on this in a bit.

Was there a particular Proverb that stuck out in your mind that really convicted or encouraged you?

Tonight, as we move into Proverbs 19, Solomon continues giving us wisdom for everyday life.
And one of the things that continues to stand out to me in these verses is the importance of the choices we make every single day.
Think about this for a minute:
How much of where we end up in life is determined by some of the choices we made along the way?

 Proverbs 18:13–24 — “Words, Wisdom, and Relationships”

Last week we began Proverbs 18, and once again Solomon reminded us that wisdom isn't merely about what we know. Wisdom shows up in how we live.

We talked about the danger of isolating ourselves from others.
We saw the foolishness of wanting to express our own opinion without first trying to understand.
We were reminded again of just how much damage careless words can cause.
And then we came to one of the great promises in Proverbs 18:10:
“The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are protected.”
Tonight, as we finish Proverbs 18, Solomon is going to bring several of those ideas together.
He's going to talk about listening before we speak, dealing with disagreements, choosing our words carefully, marriage, and friendship.
And if you think about it, all of those things have something in common:
Relationships.
Much of the wisdom Solomon gives us tonight comes down to this:
How we treat people reveals what is going on in our heart.

Bible Study: Proverbs Chapter 18 Part 1 – The Power of Words, the Strong Tower

Last week we finished Proverbs 17 by looking at the value of peace over strife, the way God tests and refines the heart, the danger of gossip and rebellion, the beauty of loyal friendship, the power of a joyful spirit, and the quiet strength of restrained speech.

We were reminded again and again that everything flows from the condition of the heart.
Tonight we move into Proverbs 18.
This chapter continues Solomon’s sharp observations about relationships, speech, pride, justice, and where we place our trust.
We will see the danger of isolation, the devastation that comes from a foolish mouth, the security found in the name of the Lord, and the danger of trusting in things that only give us the illusion of security.
Let me ask you:
When you are in your everyday life, do you think about these wise sayings?
Do you ever share them with anyone?
How do you really feel about these passages?

Proverbs 17:16–28 — Wisdom in Relationships, Conflict, and Words

Last time we looked at the first half of Proverbs 17, and Solomon gave us some very practical wisdom about peace, relationships, forgiveness, and the heart.
One of the things we keep discovering as we work our way through Proverbs is that biblical wisdom isn't just about knowing the right thing.
Wisdom changes the way we live.
It changes the way we treat people.
It changes the way we handle conflict.
It changes the way we respond when somebody hurts us.
And it certainly changes the way we use our words.
Tonight, as we finish Proverbs 17, Solomon is going to take us into some very familiar territory.
He's going to talk about friendship, foolish decisions, arguments, family heartache, injustice, and once again—the words that come out of our mouths.
And I think we'll discover that a wise heart doesn't just know when to speak; it also knows when to be quiet.

Bible Study: Proverbs Chapter 17 part 1 – Peace, the Heart and True Friendship

Last week we finished Proverbs 16 by looking at the highway of the upright, the danger of pride, the power of pleasant words, and the quiet strength of patience and self-control. We were reminded that the Lord is sovereign over every step and every outcome.
Tonight we move into Proverbs 17. This chapter is filled with short, piercing sayings about friendship, family, speech, justice, and the difference between the wise and the foolish. Solomon continues to show us that wisdom is lived out in ordinary relationships and everyday character.
Let me ask you:
What has been the one most prominent thing you’ve learned since we began this study in Proverbs?
Is there a verse or two that really speaks to you?
~~~~
Tonight, as with all the other Proverbs, we’ll see that all of these are practical and some of them are uncomfortable.
They call us to examine both our friendships and the condition of our hearts.
Bible Study: Proverbs Chapter 16 (Part 2) – The Highway of the Upright
Last week we began Proverbs 16 by looking at the Lord’s sovereignty over our plans. We saw that while we make plans in our hearts, it is the Lord who directs our steps (16:9).
We also talked about pride, justice, and the surpassing value of wisdom.
Tonight we finish the chapter with verses 17–33.
These verses focus on the path of the upright, the danger of pride, the power of our words, and the quiet strength of patience and self-control.
Solomon continues to contrast the way that leads to life with the way that leads to destruction.
Let me ask you:
When you look at the road you are currently traveling — your habits, your words, your reactions — does it look more like the highway of the upright or the path that leads to trouble?
Think about that as we study these verses.
 Bible Study: Proverbs Chapter 16 (Part 1) – The Lord Directs Our Paths
Last week in Proverbs 15 we focused on the power of our words and the condition of our hearts.
We saw how a gentle answer turns away anger, how God looks at the heart, and how the fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom.
Tonight we begin Proverbs 16.
This chapter is packed with so many rich truths, that we’re going to take it in two parts.
This week we will focus on the first half of the chapter.
Proverbs 16 opens with a strong emphasis on the Lord’s sovereignty.
In these passages, over and over Solomon reminds us that while we make plans, it is the Lord who ultimately directs our steps.
This chapter also addresses pride, justice, and the value of wisdom.
Let me ask you:
How often do you make plans and then ask God to bless them… instead of first seeking His direction?
These verses invite us to hold our plans with open hands and trust the One who sees the whole path.
Again, there is so much wisdom here that we are going to cover every verse from 1-16.
Let’s go!
